Mountain Meadows

There are shades in smoke
who gleefully withhold their answers
in dry desert washes.

They are conjured with dry manzanita
and frosty sage, and they
will gladly dance with you—

for the wind excites their feet.
They’ll trip and watch you fall, and
laugh through the voices of sparrows.

But don’t ask them questions
or they will flee and hide
among the bullet-scarred boulders—

leaving you to contemplate their passing
in the ghostly coals
of your dying fire.
